Biography

Born in Tübingen, he studied there and at Münster, took his PhD at UCLA, and taught Arabic at the ETH Zurich (1978–2014). He translated Sahar Khalifa's Wild Thorns (1983), Ghassan Kanafani's Men in the Sun (1985), Edwar al-Kharrat's City of Saffron (1990) and Emile Habibi's Ikhtiyyeh (1993, with Edward Badeen), some seventy books in all. He edited the Arabic literature series of Lenos Verlag, Basel (1984–2010).
