Compiler of a word count of modern Arabic prose (1959)

Biography

Born in Kishinev, he lived in Palestine and taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He compiled a word count of modern Arabic prose (New York, 1959) that covered, besides the common vocabulary of the press, the basic words of literary prose in the wide sense, holding that a statistical count is not an end in itself but indispensable groundwork for Arabic teaching materials. Later counts, Bobzin's verb lists among them, used his figures as a point of comparison. He also wrote on the Arab theatre and cinema.
