Biography

Born in Herat, where he grew up and studied, he later moved to Baghdad. His al-Gharib al-musannaf, a dictionary of Arabic vocabulary arranged by subject, and his Gharib al-hadith on rare words were among the earliest and most influential Arabic lexicons.
