Biography

Born in Kazerun near Shiraz in 729/1329, he travelled through Iraq, Syria, Egypt and India before settling in Zabid in Yemen, where he died. His al-Qamus al-muhit became one of the most widely used Arabic dictionaries, so much so that 'qamus' came to mean 'dictionary'.
