Bustān, 'garden', is Persian bōstān, according to Ibn Durayd and al-Jawaliqi, and occurs in the poetry of al-A'sha. Its Persian sense is 'place of fragrance': bō, 'scent', and -stān, 'place'.

Al-Farra' held it Arabic; Ibn Durayd denied this (Taj al-'Arus 4/443).
-stān is read as 'place' by Addai Sher and Steingass, and as 'taker' or 'gatherer' of scent by al-Zabidi.
