Biography

Born in Waldshut, he studied at Marburg, Giessen and Frankfurt, worked at the Orient-Institut in Beirut, and was professor at the University of Basel (1982–2009). He studied nature poetry in Arabische Naturdichtung (Beirut, 1974) and edited the fourth volume of the Diwan of Abu Nuwas (1982). He examined orality and writing in the transmission of early Islamic learning and literature in Écrire et transmettre dans les débuts de l'islam (Paris, 2002), and with Geert Jan van Gelder translated al-Maʿarri's Epistle of Forgiveness (2013–2014).
