Biography

Born in Basel, he studied comparative linguistics, classics and Islamic studies there and became professor of comparative linguistics at its university. He studied the metre and language of early Arabic poetry in Vers und Sprache im Altarabischen (1946), and published papers on Arabic grammar (1946–1949), on the qasida (1948) and on Arabic proverbs (1954).
