Grammarian; author of the Arabische Grammatik

Biography

He studied Arabic under Fleischer in Leipzig and took his doctorate with a thesis on the Diwan of ʿAlqama al-Fahl (1867), travelled in Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Iraq, and taught Arabic at Basel and Tübingen (1873) before succeeding Fleischer in Leipzig (1890). His Arabische Grammatik, one of the best grammars of its kind, was revised after him by Brockelmann and is still in use; he also collected colloquial proverbs and sayings (1878) and recorded poetry from central Arabia that his pupil Hans Stumme published as Diwan aus Centralarabien.
