Biography

Named after Kashgar, he was most probably born in Barsgan on Lake Issyk-Kul. In Baghdad around 1072–1077 he wrote, in Arabic, Diwan lughat al-Turk, a dictionary explaining Turkic words in Arabic so that Arabs could learn the language.
