Biography

Born in Lahore and raised in Ghazna, he travelled to Yemen, settled in Baghdad and died there; his body was taken to Mecca for burial. He compiled the great dictionary al-'Ubab, the six-volume al-Takmila as a supplement to al-Jawhari's Sihah, and the lexicon Majma' al-Bahrayn, along with shorter philological treatises: al-Shawarid fi al-Lughat, al-Addad on words with opposite meanings, and two studies of the word patterns fa'al and yaf'ul.
