Kept Alive in Arabic
Philo's Pneumatics
الحِيَل الروحانيّة لفيلون
Philo wrote on devices worked by air and water pressure; its Greek original is lost, and it survives in Arabic more fully than in its Latin version, itself translated from the Arabic. It contains the earliest known description of a water wheel. Ibn Zulaq wrote of 'Philo of Byzantium, maker of wheels, mills and motions by subtle devices'.
